The Bladensburg Cross is a large monument that was built by the Americam Legion on private land in the early 1920s, to honor the sacrifices of WWI soldiers who were killed in action. In many parts of America, and most of France, you will find small memorials erected by cities or counties honoring locals who died in the "War to End All Wars." This was a large scale version of that sentiment. In 1961, ownership of the private land that held the cross was transfered to the local county in Maryland. Recently, an atheist group took exception to the county paying the costs of maintaining a religious symbol. The Supreme Court ruled, this week, that it is without question a Christian cross. But, during WWI such crosses on a second role as a symbol of veterans' sacrifices. As I said, I am an atheist. I don't see people who go around filing lawsuits like this as acting in the interests of atheists. Atheism is pretty much a live and let live philosophy. Anti-theists file lawsuits over inoffensive public memorials.
