Many times I've seen stuff on the front page that is just downright dumb while the really good ones are buried along with all of the ones about Fortnite, youtubers, and whining about school/parents

The memes that make the biggest splash aren't necessarily as super special as their creators. Look at the comment streams for memes by Raydog, nixieknox, Craziness_all_the_way and others on the leaderboard. Yes, the memes are good, but a big part of their popularity is as a place to gather for meme conversation. When people know they are going to get a response if they comment, they are more likely to comment. Some of the top funniest memes are in the comments. End of lecture.
