The difference is that immigrants are people but embryos aren't.

Embryos are human and to deny that is to deny biology. You're also downgrading human life.

Fingers are human, and to deny that is to deny biology. Disembodied fingers have a right to life!

Embryos are human, but they're not people. They don't have a right to life anymore than a removed human appendix has a right to life.

I know biology quite well, and there's no legitimate argument for an embryo being a person.

When it becomes conscious, obviously

Of course not! We become unconscious every night (or more, depending on how much you drink). People who undergo DHCA have their brain activity completely cease, but are still the same person when they wake up. Their memories and personality persist through the unconsciousness. Embryos have never had that initial consciousness, and have no capacity for it. A worm or chicken or cow has more claim to personhood than an embryo, but I'll bet you have no problem eating burgers.

Also, you don't stop being a human even if you become dead. Y'all need to stop confusing "human" with "person". "Human" is a species, not a moral category. If you scrape the cells from the inside of your cheek, the slime is human. Human sperm is human. A finger that got cut off in a tablesaw is human. None of those things have personhood.

If a doctor removes your appendix, it's human tissue, but it's not a person. A fertilized human egg is also human tissue, but obviously not a person. The whole "life begins at conception" cliché is just virtue signalling. You know in your heart it's not a person, but you have to act offended to keep face with your friends. (I was a pro-life Christian in my naïve youth; I know how it works.)

I have a pretty good understanding of biology, so I must be writing poorly in a way that confuses you. Which part of my comments do you not understand?
