You should respect their faith and they should respect yours. The teacher is wrong the way you have worded it. The proper thing to do is explain why it is an article of faith.

Teaching how different faiths work should be essential. It does not endorse faith, it does enlighten and that is important to learning respect for others that you want others to give you.

To expect others to respect your faith without having to respect theirs is the real original sin of hypocrisy. :)

That we agree on, no one should assume someones faith as an act of support. It is always wrong to force those that do not share the faith (or any) and it could easily be seen as a sign the faithful are weak and need outsiders to bolster the faithful.
