In the case of tanks and jets, if you can afford one, including cost, state and local sales taxes, personal property tax, yearly safety inspection and insurance and fuel -- why not? With understanding of course, that you and you lone are fully liable for any damages that may occur, intentionally or otherwise, from the operation thereof...

But no nukes. I'm not even comfortable with govt's having them.

I was exploring the idea and pointing out it that it probably would not be worth the likely expense. I'm sure there are those however who do think people should have armed tanks. I have heard it suggested that an armed society is a polite society and that some of the problems we experience today would be eliminated if everyone was armed. It's possible that this is true, but I think that "polite society" would be an evolved condition that would only occur through significant bloodshed initially.

In some ways this "sets the edge" of a gun control thought experiment. On one end, no guns at all; at the other, no limitations at all. Clearly, some middle position is desirable, but what? The meme in some ways shows gun control as a extreme.

I think a line should be drawn between what could cause too much mass destruction and what is necessary to give people the power to fight an oppressive government. I think people shouldn't have tanks but almost every gun should be legal.

The reaction to tanks surprises me. After all, a tank is more than a cannon on a turret. It is an armored vehicle. What if the cannon were rendered inoperable? Would people feel better about it then? Guns are okay, but armor is not?
