That's the minimum, at 12,500+ years. There is (not scientifically widely accepted yet) indication that they may have been here at least 35,000 years ago, and possibly more. At that time, Homo Sapiens were just beginning to invade Neanderthal territory and Caucasions - their hybrid progeny - did not exist yet.

We now know Caucasions have at least 4% Neanderthal DNA in them (I'm surprised it's not more, since the difference between them and other people in terms of physical features is Neanderthalic - not accidental that they look like a caricature of whites).

In fact, all modern humans except for Sub Saharan Africans (THE Homo Sapiens Sapiens) have some Neanderthal admixture in them, including Native Americans.

I just read a few weeks ago that auto immune diseases may be a legacy of this hybridization. Spreading to lands whose diseases they had no previous exposure to, many Homo Sapiens acquired resistance via genes contributed by Neanderthals with such pairings. While conferring protection, they are alien enough that modern bodies sometimes attack them, thus resulting in the auto immune disorders.

Don't the Hopi legends talk of other group(s) that lived concurrently among their ancestors? I seem to recall something about mountain carvings and deep mine shafts of some sort. I think I have a book that talks about that somewhere. I'll see if I can find it.

Native Americans are Homo Sapiens if that's whom you were referring to.

I don't know much about Hopi legends, unless you mean the Anasazi, who were Native Americans whose culture collapsed a few centuries before European arrival.
