I meant moral relativism; I've erred in that tag

That there is something that is absolute truth and absolutely false. Not only in a factual sense but a moral sense as well.

For example, is it normally wrong to physically attack or rape an innocent woman, unprovoked? Yes or no?

You're right, but many argued that it is right, culturally. They would get around the notion, the wrongness of an act by saying that rape under certain worldviews, is a sacrifice of a greater good. Thus, who am I to judge? My morals are not anymore superior to others.

Ahh, like in Sodom and Gomorrah, when Lot offered his two young virgin daughters to be raped by the village men in order to protect the two visitors?
And he's the one God liked and saved.
Afterwards, they got their father drunk so they can rape him to impregnate themselves.

Then there's that wondrous story about the guy whose concubine was gang raped and severely beaten. After managing to crawl to his place, he cut her into 12 pieces to save himself from the disgrace of her defiled body.

THESE are the good guys in the Good Book. Hate to think what the bad ones did.

Hate to see that funky bunch touring Tijuana.

All my Catholic schooling, funny they never mentioned that one (nor much of the rest for that matter). Saw it in a meme late last year, I couldn't be arsed to look it up now so I improvised to fill the gaps and for dramatic purposes!

So would you agree then that there is such a thing as Absolute Truth?

No. Truth is mutable, and has a tendency to be in our image.

So now who are you to tell me that the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah is wrong?
1 up, 6y
I am me.

I also did not say such a thing.
I merely pointed out the story to highlight this so-called absolute morality as decided by a jealous wrathful tyrant God.

Source of morality is God Himself; He is by nature, good.

If God is by nature, good, then it is impossible for Him to act unjustly.

But for us, we see only from the ground level. We do not see the overall picture so to us His acts would seem unfair, cruel, arbitrary, and brutal. And yet, our ways, shifts as the wind.

Recall that it wasn't too long ago that we, with our latest sciences, regarded the African as a lower than the European due to brain or cranial size as we also have taken the theory of biological evolution a bit too far, which resulted in Social Darwinism. From thence, lead to Euthanasia programs from the 1920's to the end of the Holocaust.

And we often charge God of wrong doing? He was opposed to racism and inequality from the very beginning (Exodus 22:21-22, Proverbs 14:21, Jeremiah 13:23, Acts 17:26, & 1 Corinthians 10:32).

This is why the Bible says the following:

8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.
9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.
- Isaiah 55:8-9

Somehow I'm prevented to "reply" to your latest response. Maybe you've also barred me but you have been good at allowing me to respond since last year so trust you.

"If it's impossible for god to act unjustly, why does he do things that would be considered unjust if a human did them (for example, killing babies)? How is he just if he has one set of standards for us and another set of standards for himself?"

By the virtue of being the Creator alone gives Him the right to do what He wills (Isaiah 45:7). Not only that, WE are wicked since birth (Genesis 8:21). When Adam sinned, the entire is cursed w/ the propensity to sin (Romans 5:12-16). He who have sinned but once can commit every other sin (James 2:10).

This is demonstrated by a history of utter sinfulness that spanned a thousand years leading up to the Flood. God saw that the human race became entirely wicked which therefore compelled Him to destroy man utterly (Genesis 6:5-7). We thus have no right to demand anything at all from the Lord.

"And how is he opposed to inequality when the Bible says he chose one specific group of people to be his chosen people, and he gave them more attention than anyone else, and also gave them laws which other groups didn't have to follow? How is playing favorites not inequality?"

First, in choosing Israel, He did not do so because they deserved it but it was His sovereign decision (Deuteronomy 7:7-9).

Second, in also choosing Israel, does not mean He had left others to their own devices. There is what we call, "Common Grace" as He causes the sun to "rise" on the wicked and the good; also rain on the Just and on the Unjust. It is analogous on His goodness upon nations that do good and vengeance upon the wicked.

Third, while they've experienced much blessings as God's people, much is also expected of them as God's people. God required them to completely obey His commandments & they will experience unparalleled blessings; but if they disobey Him as a whole people, shall thus be cursed; & that includes the annexation of their land by foreign powers, and exile (Deuteronomy 28-29).

Fourth, the reason why Israel is chosen despite them being a rather insignificant people in every way, and why so much is expected of them, is because they are to be the light of the world (Isaiah 42:6)

"And if God's thoughts and ways are so much different and higher than ours, how can we even have a relationship with such a being?"

By trusting Him.

Unfortunately, Octavia, that is the best answer I can give you. Truth by nature doesn't always make sense, nor is understandable; kind or palatable.

Other than evidence, If you accept or deny a notion based on what is most understandable and sensible, then wouldn't you be guilty of choosing it based on your taste and preference?

Wouldn't you rightly accuse me of it if I reject your cosmology because atheism to me is cruel. Because if it is real then we have no real purpose and significance other than to feed, procreate, die, and be forever no more? As also we'll always be subjected to random chances and when the next asteroid hits 10x larger than the ones that killed most dinosaurs, then we'll forever be extinct?

Now God would be hypocritical if there's no real reason behind it. But there is, only that He doesn't tell us why all the time. He doesn't have to, or owe us an explanation. If He tells us everything then how can we grow in trust in Him?

For example, why did God instructed the Hebrews to kill every Canaanite men, women, and children? For one to forbid us from murdering another, wouldn't that go back on His word? No, because the wickedness of the Canaanites was the major factor in their destruction. Even so, the Canaanites have had 400 years to repent; from the time of promise that the land of Canaan shall be Abraham's people to the start of conquest (Genesis 17:7-8 & Deuteronomy 9:4).

They weren't entirely without prophets either as Melchizedek the king was among them along with Lot who've had to leave (Genesis 14:12, 17-18).

Lastly, the news of the Hebrews approaching and defeating the Canaanite armies was enough for Rahab the Harlot to switch sides, thus saving her life and the lives of her families and then the Gibeonites also switched sides which saved them (Joshua 2:9-14, 9:3-15, & 11:19-20).

"Why do you think atheism is cruel? I don't understand."

For the reasons that I've already stated (Psalms 103:15-17).

"And if the Canaanites were evil, does that make killing the babies okay? You're justifying genocide by saying they were evil, and even defending the slaughter of little children. Does that seem moral to you?"

Yes, it does: when God orders it. Particularly when they're raised in a thoroughly wicked society that spans for generations (like the generational cycle of alcoholism, and child and spousal abuse). You've also heard the term "You can take the child from the streets but you can't take the streets from the child".

And besides this, God has given them 400 years to repent; and sent prophets like Melchizedek. And for the people before the Flood with Enoch and Noah; and the people of Israel like Jeremiah and Zachariah.
