Unfortunately, Octavia, that is the best answer I can give you. Truth by nature doesn't always make sense, nor is understandable; kind or palatable.
Other than evidence, If you accept or deny a notion based on what is most understandable and sensible, then wouldn't you be guilty of choosing it based on your taste and preference?
Wouldn't you rightly accuse me of it if I reject your cosmology because atheism to me is cruel. Because if it is real then we have no real purpose and significance other than to feed, procreate, die, and be forever no more? As also we'll always be subjected to random chances and when the next asteroid hits 10x larger than the ones that killed most dinosaurs, then we'll forever be extinct?
Now God would be hypocritical if there's no real reason behind it. But there is, only that He doesn't tell us why all the time. He doesn't have to, or owe us an explanation. If He tells us everything then how can we grow in trust in Him?
For example, why did God instructed the Hebrews to kill every Canaanite men, women, and children? For one to forbid us from murdering another, wouldn't that go back on His word? No, because the wickedness of the Canaanites was the major factor in their destruction. Even so, the Canaanites have had 400 years to repent; from the time of promise that the land of Canaan shall be Abraham's people to the start of conquest (Genesis 17:7-8 & Deuteronomy 9:4).
They weren't entirely without prophets either as Melchizedek the king was among them along with Lot who've had to leave (Genesis 14:12, 17-18).
Lastly, the news of the Hebrews approaching and defeating the Canaanite armies was enough for Rahab the Harlot to switch sides, thus saving her life and the lives of her families and then the Gibeonites also switched sides which saved them (Joshua 2:9-14, 9:3-15, & 11:19-20).
