Wanting people to be at least civil is an honorable goal. I don't expect people to be nice. People are going to disagree, even to the point of making accusations, etc. But name calling ends the discussion. Besides, we are all trying to convince the "great undecideds," of the world, not those who solidly disagree with us. I was raised in the house of a Rock Ribbed Republican. My Father's party stood for many of the things the modern Democratic Party defends. We cannot ignore that both parties changed in 1965, when the Civil Rights laws were passed and the Constitution became enforceable for people who had had their basic rights denied by some states. The Republican Party of my Father could not accomodate the new "base." Even John Birchers felt uncomfortable in his party, except in 1964. They had attacked Eisenhower and his administration. The fringe of that movement merged with the fringe of old "Southern Democrats," and they are now the Republicans' problem. Whether or not these people are real Republicans or if traditional Republicans agree with their extremist beliefs, they have become associated with the Republican President in ways that nake them a big part of the GOP's mosaic. When one of them attacks me instead of arguing a point, I think of my conservative late Brother. He would have driven them out of his local party. He was a true conservative Republican. I sincerely believe that the Republican Party is better than that and that rational conservatives will eventually prevail. Then we can have great arguments without hurling personal insults and threats.
