consider this:
America was not always a two party duopoly.
and even those two parties, both republican and democrat, have shifted ideologies over the years.
in the early years, republicans would have been considered "liberal",and the democrats more staunch in supporting business.
then the depression hit,and WW2 and America's longest, and most violent labor movement, which gave birth to unions.
by this time the republicans were already leaning towards business due to FDR and his more "socialist" policies, and the democrats saw the unions as a massive voter base.so the republicans courted business (southern strategy.*more to it,but hey,it's a meme site) and democrats courted workers.
which is pretty much what we have had ideologically speaking.
but there are two things of note:
1.the tea party forced the republicans to have their own "civil war" and find a way to achieve a more cohesive philosophy.
2.bill Clinton changed the rules for the democrats.who at that time were getting their clocks cleaned by republican corporate donors.this is when the democrats abandoned the American working people.(my opinion).we got NAFTA,3 strikes and the utter decimation of the welfare system.
but the democrats have been playing the "I feel you pain working people",which has (thank god) finally begin to fall on deaf ears,so what have the democrats relied on for the past 10-15 years?
"well,at least we aren't THAT politician".
that's right:the lesser of two evils.
and the American people have had enough.
liberals and progressives are never going to take power, they never do!
but what liberals and progressives do,and what they are SUPPOSED to do..is push the narrative to the left a bit.
take sanders for instance.
nobody would have thought that a no-name self-proclaimed socialist would become a household name, and not only that, get the entire country to talk about medicare4all,and high marginal tax rates.
will that happen?
I don't know.a lot of powerful and influential monied forces are pushing hard against it,but the fact that the American people are TALKING about it ,is simply astonishing.
bernei sanders almost single handedly injected universal health care into the body politic, which would have been unheard of prior to his running for president.
so we need people to push the boundaries.
just like we need people (conservatives) to slow the roll a bit, let's not be too hasty, let;s think this through.
