you are closer to the truth than you may be aware.
rewind to 1970,ans the Nixon administration wanted to know why there was so much civil unrest from the turbulent 60's.the federal government was set the task,by two separate commissions to look into why America had experienced such civil upheavel in the form of:civil rights movement, labor movement,anti-Vietnam,the woman's movement etc etc.
I will use the findings of the tri-lateral commission, which was the liberal commission set the task.
according to their findings, the reason for all that civil unrest was "an excess of democracy and education".
and ta-da!
in 1978 the dept of education rolled out an entirely new curriculum for k-12.
and when you understand that true, actual "education" is a means where the educated begin to question the power systems in place.those educated folks begin to ask "why",and begin to exercise their rights to push back against the political and financial institutions.
so I actually agree with your premise of not only the governments "poor" education system, but am adding that it is by design.
to indoctrinate small children up to teen years to tacitly accept authority and strive to conform to an arbitrary set of "rules" which keeps those same kids compliant and easily manipulated to perpetuate a system that is actually their oppressor.
because education is freedom of thought, and freedom to criticize and question.
add to this the student debt crisis, and now you have a whole generation starting their life in debt, and coming from a place of scarcity.
hard to question the system when you can't even pay off your debts.
which leaves the oligarchs, the privileged and the upper class to continue their pillaging of our country unabated, and owning a media that glorifies them as somehow being deserving.
so while I may be of the mind that education is actually an investment, and has been a proven to benefit a society as a whole.
our current system only produces muppets.
and if you happen to be a fantastic educator, you will struggle within out current system.even college professors are being squeezed out for the more pliable "adjunct" professors.
the American education system is an utter mess.
