I didn't mention "hate crimes", but in any case, he blatantly lied about the events that transpired, claiming the boys swarmed /him/, that they surrounded him and wouldn't let him leave (forcible confinement against his will), and that they were being very threatening towards him, all while chanting racist things and "build that wall".
Even IF none of that is, by the letter of the law, a "hate crime" (which is arguable, especially on the forcible confinement, and especially considering some of the ridiculous things the left labels as hate crimes), even so, he still pretended to be a victim so he could get public attention and support. And /pretending/ to be a victim was the point of the meme, thus the term "fictims".
He even straight up lied about being a Vietnam vet, perhaps to play to what he thought would get conservative support.
