Unfortunately, in the US, a person that wants to dine in a full service restaurant gets to subsidize the restaurant owner's payroll. If tips weren't given, most restaurant owners would be required to pay the actual minimum wage, $7.25/hr, vs the $2.13 an hour minimum wage for tipped employees.

My cousin drives for Lyft. There's one town he rarely deals with because there's no money to it. He'll drop people off there, but won't pick up, normally. He dropped off one guy last weekend, and got a call to pick up north of town. Ended up with a decent fare, plus, in his opinion, a great tip. A few hours later, he got pinged to pick up in that town: the same guy that tipped him well. Guess what? He made a beeline to that place to pick up the guy.

Thats why... you learn to work hard and be nice to others... and get a better job eventually... i got tips as the grill man!

Depends on what you consider a better job. My mom worked with a woman in a trailer factory when I was a kid. The woman worked weekends at a local restaurant/tourist trap. She made more in 2 days waiting tables than she did working in the factory (which paid decent money) She eventually quit factory work and waited tables until she retired.
