I agree. I also think some are unfairly comparing them to the sacred first three. Rogue One is really awesome. And I've enjoyed the new movies, even though I still think the original trilogy is the best.

By that logic, Empire Strikes Back should be hated for going in a direction than New Hope. There's a difference between "subverting expectations" and just spitting in the face of fans and creators alike.

Empire Strikes Back was criticised by many when it was first released.

The difference is that people very quickly warmed up to it and realized how good it was. 2 years later and Last Jedi is still hated, even being used in film school to teach what not to do.

IS TLJ used in film school to teach what not to do? That's the second time I've heard someone claim that, neither giving a source, and when I've tried googling it, I get nothing. Sounds faker than the "audiences walked out of Episode IX test screening" lie.
