When people were allowed to keep the fruits of their labors rather than put them in collective stores, they applied themselves more diligently. The weak mentioned above may not have been able to swing an axe for days on end in order to clear a plot of land for producing food, but they exchanged their other skills for the excess food of their fellow colonists, creating a thriving community based on a high degree of self reliance and a wide range of commodities. These weaker skills included, making rope, repairs, seamstress and tailor work, teaching, etc.

Neither of these two economic philosophies work in their purest forms. Each requires some element of the other in order to benefit society on the whole. Striking that balance is the war fought each election day.

Quite true, seemed like that balance was easier to find before. Now everyone is ultra-hardcore to preserve what they think is most important.
