Here's an actual test question from my air force training (I never had to make a jump). "You have bailed out at 10,000 feet. How long do you have to open your chute?" The correct answer is "The rest of your life".
Excellent point. I recently went on a private helicopter ride. There was no jump involved, but I did have to sign a waiver that the helicopter owner would be held harmless in the event of a crash.
