Well there is a strong argument that slavery is the reason black people are so poor now. Destroyed the family structure. But welfare won't help, really nothing we can do.

Remember the 60s? When it became socially acceptable to divorce, not marry, ect. Black families were always worse than white ones, and when the 60s came, they couldn't handle the freedoms. It got worse with the white one, staying below. The reason it was always below is because families were systematically ripped apart during slavery. Before the 1960s cultural revolution, it necessary to stay together.

Is it really bad to have more freedoms, culturally. People make bad decisions, but dont they deserve their own choices?

Having unlimited choices isn't a morally good or bad in itself, (neither is a lack of choice). It's not the number of choices, but the decisions themselves that determine a good life. Progressivism as a movement serves to undermine traditional life decisions that, viewed over all, have lead most people to a happy life.

When you look at the results of Progressive thought over time, and not just take on what Progressives say about themselves...and I mean look at the Progressive results they achieve, you will find destruction of social structures that have worked, not perfectly, but pretty well for thousands of years. Progressivism is a philosophy of destruction of the traditional mores in favor of sub-groups they break out as victims.
