It is a racist joke. Or at least it is widely accepted to be a racist joke.

There probably was much laughter because the audience mostly supports Hillary and her joke was a jab at the interviewer and the joke implied that the interviewer has issues with telling black people apart. Or at least implied that the interviewer did not prepare well enough (mixed up names).

That said, differentiating between faces on a continuum is a skill. Our brains literally learn to tell faces apart. Exposure to a new set of appearances that you have not had much experience with very well could lead to many mistakes. (off topic, differentiating cars, year, make, model, can use the same part of the brain that differentiates faces)

"joke implied" ....whether it's implied or inferred, i dunno, but would anyone give Trump the benefit of the doubt here (or anyone else on the right, for that matter)

I have a fantastic memory for faces, i've been able to recognise people i haven't seen in 30 odd years, sometimes since they were children but i was able to recognise them as adults...and yet i couldn't tell the difference between 2 makes of car if my life depended on it!
