Yet no northern state offered to take in freed slaves. They wound up living in shanty towns and such. The Union government that remained in power, the Confederate government was dissolved, also didn't lift a finger to stop Jim Crow laws for the next 100 years. MLK was assassinated in 1968, not 1868. And Frederick Douglass even met with Abraham Lincoln to complain about free blacks in the Union army being paid less than whites. Yet yankees claim to be heroes that fought for black people. No, blacks were an excuse for political aggression and were kicked aside by the yankees when their usefulness was done.
And the standard response is to start ranting about how horrible slavery is. I don't defend slavery. But people need to get their history straight. Black Africans sold other black Africans to the Europeans. Black Africans are as responsible for slavery in the US as anybody. There was an article in the New Yorker where a Nigerian gentleman talked about his family's involvement in the slave trade. https://www.newyorker.com/culture/personal-history/my-great-grandfather-the-nigerian-slave-trader
