Democracy essentially where the people decide literally everything. In a republic, you elect people to decide for you. We're a republic in most ways. The only place we're a democracy is in local/state elections. And even there, most state laws are passed by elected representatives, not a general vote. There's really not much evidence that the USA is a democracy; we're a republic with a few democratic institutions, though they are almost all small.
