I got pretty good at it. But after a while even this no longer worked, so my dad would take the tubes out of the TV, take them to the store to have them tested on a machine, and since of course they were all bad, get new ones. This worked for a while until the new tubes started to degrade, starting the cycle all over again. There were only three channels, i.e., the major networks. Around the early 1970s independent stations started coming on line.
Something from that time that I found funny even then were the commercials for color TVs showing how great their pictures were. What they forgot was that the picture could only be as good as the TV you were watching it on, which in my house was black & white.
