It seems like it's also possible that teaching our kids that the world is fair and everyone is a winner becomes a problem when they get to high school and figure out the world is unfair and they're a powerless loser. I'm sure there's many reasons, none of them simple, but that sticks out in my mind.

It wasn't an assault rifle. Those are full-auto. Either way, children certainly are devalued. Abortion and birth control spring to mind.

well, technically speaking there are no "Assault Rifles" they are just Rifles. But that's what most of the media has called them. And yes the fight for gun control has gotten stronger after Oakridge but that's why we don't just make new laws, we have to REMAKE those laws.

On the assault rifle thing, an assault rifle has, by definition, a fully automatic setting. The M-16 since early development (but not since its conception) and practically all its descendants lack full-auto capability and are therefore not assault rifles.
Still, I do think a change should be made to the law, but simply adding tighter gun control isn't going to fix the problem.

Maybe parents, teachers, and society should value kids more. Stop teaching them everyone is a winner and giving everyone a participation trophy.

Start teaching them responsibility and accountability.

Gun, like any other tool, can not be used without an operator. The operator has to make a conscious decision in order to use that tool. In order to use that tool violently against innocent victims, the user has to make a conscious decision in both his heart and mind.

A gun, like any other tool, is an inanimate object, not equipped with a heart or a mind,and therefore cannot make a decision to shoot anyone.

Really? Then why do we care if other countries like North Korea get nuclear weapons and missles powerful enough to reach the US? They're just tools...
