What hurts voters most is the corrupt two party system that multiple polls have shown that an increasing number of voters despise. The "spoiler" effect argument while it has some element of truth to it ignores the bigger picture being the increasingly poor quality of candidates due in large part to voters increasingly being forced to choose between the "lesser evil" as well as the fact that the extremes both parties are increasingly appealing to continue to represent the actual views of most voters less and less.
