There was a law that was passed in 1951 that banned self-service at gas stations in certain areas of Oregon.

Just a matter of not changing from all attendant-pumping go all self-serve like everywhere else in the country. And I have little idea why...

They are an odd sort, Oregonians. :)

A good bit of them want to break off from Oregon and collate with the a section of Northern California/Shasta Cascade and create the 51st state called the State of Jefferson. Odd sort indeed, but it would be cool to have another state.
