The only buses I ever drove were school bus types. Front engine, so had a back door emergency exit. That's how we entered and exited.

If you're talking about a Greyhound or city bus, those usually have electric doors and a key or switch. If they have the mechanical opener, like school buses, the mech latch is locked in place, and the rear, door is used
