Maybe I'll put the last 4 pieces together like a puzzle and then take the pic :-)
Rats, I already tossed the moon map :-(

You had a great running template here lol

My stuff never goes far, so I didn't think it would have mattered. When the pizza came out of the oven, I put it on my moon map to cut it on :-(

Thanks, man :-)
By the way, we drove to South Carolina and saw the total eclipse. Thanks for your advice about not taking too many pics and just enjoying the eclipse.
We thought of your words as totality neared.

I'm humbled - thank you for thinking of me!
Now, all I have to do is stay alive until the Spring of 2024 when we New Yorkers get a chance to see a total eclipse

I'm very happy you will be in a great location in 2024.
It will turn your world upside down with all the hoopla and traffic though, lol.
Although we had no intention of going to see that one, we did enjoy seeing such an amazing sight, that we may go again! We just won't drive back right after the event! Took us 19 hours to get to Delaware from South Carolina this time, ugh!
April should hopefully bring clearer skies than the August haze. I wish you good health and nice weather :-)

Thanks. I'll need all the good luck I can gather. Living right between two of the Great Lakes (Lake Ontario and Lake Erie), we usually get cloudy skies when we want them the least. It's been 4 years since the last major meteor shower that wasn't clouded over! LOL

What a GREAT photo! That's a nice shot of the corona (the white area). It's the sun's actual atmosphere; and because the sun is so bright, the corona is difficult to detect. You also managed to capture the planet Mars!!! It is the white speck to the left of the sun, inside my red circle.

Here's the difference in 7 minutes between almost total and total. You can see the clouds still in sunlight.
As totality fell over us, we could feel the darkness closing in. The people cheered and clapped. Sounds of awe and wonder came from the crowd. It was a moving experience.
After we got home, I heard on the radio, sounds from each time zone of the eclipse going total. Similar sounds from the crowds gave me goosebumps.
Hell yeah, I wanna go again!
As far as the night sky, it was bright, like you said it would be, but we could see brighter objects. I thought the spot you circled was Regulus, in Leo. Either way, to see a night sky object that close to the sun was spectacular!
Here's to 2024 :-)

Not knowing the exact orientation of your photo, I suppose it's possible that the little white dot is Regulus, but I tend to doubt it. I've checked several star maps and I am of the opinion that Regulus was just too close to the sun to be see...it would have been washed out by the glare of the sun's corona. Looking at the illustration on the left, Mars looks like a more likely candidate. But, again, I wasn't there, so I can't say with any real certainty.

I see what you're saying about the proximity of Regulus to the sun. I didn't give it much thought earlier, but it really was super cool to see stuff in the daytime sky that would normally be hidden. We didn't have a full view of the sky due to clouds closing in. We were blessed that we were able to see the eclipse at all really. Just a few minutes from us it was raining!!! There was enough open sky to see objects... maybe bright stars, mars, mercury were available to be seen, but the window in the clouds wasn't very large. As you mentioned, orientation was difficult to determine because we really couldn't see enough to get our bearings. We were really viewing it though a thin veil of clouds, not absolutely clear. I was terrified that it was going to be blocked! About 25 minutes before totality, clouds DID block the sun for a few minutes. I started packing up our chairs. My wife talked me into staying and I'm glad for that :-)

Even though it’s approaching solar minimum, we’ll be under the auroral oval, so we’re hoping for a show :-)

Thanks, we will be there for a week, so hopefully something shows up.
There’s a research facility nearby that has an all-sky camera. I’ve seen the aurora on there the last two nights. Of course, that’s no guarantee, but it keeps me hopeful :-)

You lucky dogs. LOL
Anything is possible...a CME (coronal mass ejection) is not exclusively reliant on solar cycles, and can happen at ANY time. And if that CME heads in earth's direction: BINGO!!! Lemme know what happened when you come home.
Stay safe but have fun.
