Lately I've noticed an influx of users who will post a comment on my meme with a link to their own meme. Usually their link takes me to a meme they created that has absolutely nothing to do with my meme. That's called spam. If you want me to check out a meme you've created, ask me to check it out.

I've also noticed that many times, the user who spammed my meme with the link to their's fails to upvote my meme in the process. Guess what... I will DOWNVOTE your meme AND the comment you left on mine.

You've been warned.

It feels like the culture of the internet has gone on a downward trend to where people just want to be recognized ("internet famous") and nothing else. It's sad to see imgflip is no exception, but it's also nice to see it's mostly the new users who don't understand that here, you get ahead with quality instead of being a massive attention seeker.

As I have mentioned somewhere in this thread, I don't mind if someone asks me to check out their meme, because I will do it and if I like it, I'll upvote it. However, posting a link to your meme without any "commentary" for my meme and not upvoting my meme, will not get you anywhere.

I prefer a meme comment that has to do with my meme, but if you're going to comment on my meme by posting a link to your meme, you better upvote mine or I'm downvoting both the comment and the meme you linked me to.

Whenever I post the link to one of my memes in the comments, it's always on the same subject as the meme I'm commenting on, and I'm sure to leave an upvote too.

Good call. Sometimes the same people hit every meme on the first two pages... And don't give a single up vote.
5 ups, 7y
I haven't had any problem with this. Maybe it's because my memes are practically invisible, and I'm mostly a commenter...

Yeah, that sounds about right.

The trouble is, that a lot of users are morons and they encourage that behavior.

Right now (about 1:30am Monday EST) the #2 spot on the front page is a cute gif about a giraffe coughing up an upvote, posted by supersaiynblueyasir.

When I clicked on his profile, I saw this as his five latest comments: They're all exactly the same comment, on 5 diffferent memes - a link to his gif. He also posted it on WiteRabid's "Dark Desert Highway" pie chart on the Front Page. That must be at least part of the story as to how his submission got viewed and upvoted.

When people see a link like that, they should automatically downvote that comment. But instead, some people are apparently clicking through and upvoting it, which is just stupid - it gives positive reinforcement to antisocial behavior.

No matter how much we talk against spamming links and tell people it's wrong, as long as there are people upvoting it, it will keep going.

What I want to know is how he got 72 upvotes in just 9 hours after submitting the meme. I'm sorry, but even if you share it on everyone's meme, you won't get 72 upvotes that quickly. That seems unbelievable for a gif of a giraffe puking an upvote arrow. I have seen so many clever and funny memes that never see the light of day and this guy gets an upvote gif to the front page in under 9 hours?

I don't want to come off as sounding bitter about it, but something doesn't seem right. Even sharing the gif as many times as he does wouldn't get that many votes.

OK, I didn't notice that, that it did so well, in just 9 hours. And I don't have the answer.

But, since people on imgflip seem to have some kind of Pavlov's dog reaction to anything that has to do with upvotes, the way I envision it happening is maybe something like the following scenario:

The spamming got it enough upvotes (say 6-10) to be visible in the top 10 pages of Hot. From there, as people were scrolling, they reflexively upvoted it, because everyone loves things to do with upvotes, apparently. And that got it the 72.

That could be one way it happened, but I could be wrong.

Modda is asking the same question under the link on WiteRabid's Pie Chart, and supersaiynblueyasir has commented, if you want to check out what he's saying. I don't really understand his answers though.

His explanation is pretty tough to read, but from what I gather he's saying is since he believes all his memes suck because they don't get very many upvotes, he started "sharing" his upvote meme on other people's memes so it would get more attention. And like you mentioned, people seem to like upvote memes a lot. I'm not sure why. I don't mind them being posted on the meme itself, but when you post a link to it to upvote it, that's where I have a problem.

I agree with you about the distinction between posting on the meme and linking something.

If you post a Click to show upvote gif, or a positive comment, you're supporting and encouraging the person's meme.

If you link to your own meme or gif, even if you intend it as just a compliment, it has the effect of drawing views (and also potential votes) to your meme. That approach isn't fair to others.

I don't have a problem with someone sharing their meme on my meme, but it's when they post the link and nothing else. They just post the link and it has nothing to do with mine and they don't upvote my meme.

IKR----if they were good, then they should stand on their own. I can think of one newer user that does this or makes bizarre comments that have nothing to do with the meme:(

It isn't just you. However, I was using you as an example since you have a front page meme that got to the front page from all the spamming you were doing with it. I don't know how it is on other meme sites, but here spamming is looked down on and users will start to resent it.

Just so you know for future reference.

I don't mind if you link something if you ask me to check it out. I'll check out a meme if you ask me to. If I like it I'll upvote it. But just posting a link on a meme, especially if the link has nothing to do with my meme and you don't upvote my meme, is spamming.
