It's sickening how these lost Atheists complain about having to read our nice Christian-themed memes, but they don't give A SECOND THOUGHT about using profanity and taking the Lord's Name in vain when they make their own memes or reply to them! Ignorant jerks!
And even though I personally never watched Veggie Tales, I heard a lot of good things about the show. In my day, there was a nice animated show called "Davey and Goliath" :-)
Perhaps I was a little too vague; when I talk about F-ed up crap, I'm not necessarily talking about the OT as a whole, but more specifically about genocide, condoning slavery, human sacrifices, rape, mass murder of one's kin, etc..
But the Bible doesn't necessarily CONDONE it. Rather It merely tells of it occurring back then because of the brutal times when the tribes and such didn't have God in their hearts. It's a long story, obviously, but that's pretty much the gist of it. Sorry it took me so long to reply. I didn't even see your notification until just a minute ago
Well, in the book of Exodus, God tells Moses as a commandment that there shall be no punishment for a man who beats his slave unless they are either beaten to death, or incapacitated for more than two days, "For the slave is his property." This (at least as far as the Israelites were concerned) was at the very least an indication that God was morally complacent with owning slaves.
I think the biggest problem people have with slave ownership is that too many of us think of them as being black and from Africa. This is not true. In fact, there have been humans owning slaves since time began. Not that it's necessarily right. But it has been going on forever, so to speak.
Of course slavery goes farther back than the "white man's burden" ideology of eighteenth century Western Europe, but as far as I'm concerned, owning another human being is not ok.
That's because you didn't live back then. In many cases, being a slave kept you fed, housed, and protected from wild beasts, et al. The part that disgusted me was how many slaves owned by plantation farmers treated the Africans like farm animals! But that is due to no fault of the Bible. It was mostly due to idots, which is why slavery eventually had to end. And it did, for the most part

With some things it's a matter of reporting what happened. The Bible is brutally honest about human depravity. With slavery a good portion of it was actually indentured servitude. They weren't so casual about ppl being screwed out of what they were lawfully owed. You or someone else could buy you (and often your family) out of your labor obligation. You were not allowed to have a fellow Hebrew as a slave. But there was straight up enslavement of say conquered foreign enemies. And we look through modern Western lenses and get upset. Undoing that can be somewhat involved and most ppl are too closedminded. Nothing personal. By the way I keep meaning to tell you that I like your screen name a lot.
While it is simply a matter of reporting the facts in some cases, such acts of depravity are often ordered by God himself. Where slavery is concerned, God commands to Moses that there shall be no punishment for a man who beats his slave unless they are either beaten to death, or incapacitated for more than two days, "For the slave is his property." This, at least to the Israelites, certainly counted as condoning slavery.

Again lenses. It helps of course (or, really, it's esential) to be in relationship with God such that you learn that you are the clay molded by the Sovereign Potter. When it comes down to it I accept scripture as divine revelation, without error, etc.II don't judge God or Jis Word. Tjey judge us. It isn't unreasonable but human reason is both limited and corrupted. Again nothing personal in that I'm not picking on anyone here. :D
Mine too. I sometimes answer questions with an "I don't know, Daaaavey" in the Goliath voice. You have to be a certain age to get it though. Yeah I'm old.
Did they teach you about Sodom and Gomorrah? Did they include God smiting all the firstborn in Egypt, or God commanding genocide against the Amalekites? Of course they didn't. It's a kids' show. Many of the stories in the Old Testament include brutality of the sort featured in this meme; that was the joke.
