So here are some of the basics of meme etiquette...

If you comment on something upvote it

If somebody replies to your comment or comments on your meme upvote it

If you don't like a meme "downvote it or not" then move on and find one you like "flag" it only if it's offensive, otherwise just ignore it.

If you are being trolled, ignore it, we all have our moments where we just have to reply. You can try and be reasonable, if that fails ignore them. Don't mention their name or reply to their comments, even downvoting them can let them know they are getting to you. Ignore them and they have no power. Don't worry that fellow memers will take their side or believe them. Those of us that have been around know all about them, we won't support them, this is not a site where negativity is approved of or taken seriously.

There are many others, hopefully we can hear from different people and get their advice.

Great meme! Front page news :) The number one thing I would say to new users, if you have a question, ask a top user or two, or put the question into a meme. If I get a notification or see a question in a meme and know the answer, I will try reply. If I don't know the answer, I will try to find someone who does.

There is a lot about memes you can never learn without asking. There is a great history to them and they are much more than just captions on a picture. We have lost a lot of the old school people, but gained some really awesome new users that respect memes because they love making them. That's really what it comes down to, if you love memes all you need to do is be a little respectful and you can learn everything from all the amazing meme makers on this site. New people with new ideas can teach us as well. We don't want to keep people down, I wouldn't teach people how to photo shop if all I cared about was how my memes do. It's about a community of people sharing ideas and a lot of laughter.

I partially agree. Sites like IMG and many other other popular blogs worldwide are more and more used as campaign tool for (political) propaganda. It is steered messaging to create a certain atmosphere and plant seeds. We would be naive to think that this is not happening. I would do it, it is relatively easy, low cost, and will have impact on opinion making in a target group that is very actively online and therefore spreads messages even quicker. Ignoring this might not be the right way to work. I think there is also a role for mods here because it harms the reputation of the website.

In my experience around here it's usually an immature kid trying to get attention. However I see your point, and wouldn't be surprised if that had happened here. Our mods only seem to step in once it has already gone on for months with one user like what just happened recently. But then they just make alt accounts or probably already had them just never commented with them until losing the main one they upvoted with those alts lol.

I'm sorry you misunderstood this memes intent, it is not about rules. It's about being polite. This is the advice I was given when I started here, it's worked well for me so I'm sharing it. You don't have to agree with it, I'm trying to help out new people who might actually care what people around here consider to be polite behavior. .

You said someone was oppressing you with Christianity and I'm not really sure what you think oppression is, but not too many Christians I know oppress anyone.

I've always upvoted your comments, so not sure where your so called oppression is coming from.

It isnt about whether the upvoting is right or wrong, it's just common curtisy to upvote the comments you comment on. No one forced you to join this site. You don't have to participate in anything here. But if you don't, what's the point in even saying anything? You chose to be rude about it and those that have been here for years like I have been, I know what the courtesy is. You're just the new guy who refuses to be nice about things.

But, like you said, you won't be told what to do. And like I said, no one is telling you what to do.

I've seen so many of the newer users (and a few veteran users too) who never follow the etiquette and that's why they don't really get anywhere anymore.

I will disagree about just completely ignoring trolls; you should definitely downvote/flag them if they're bothering you or someone else. That's how we as a site let the trolls know their behavior is not tolerated on here. Other than that, there's not really anything else I can add or improve.

I agree downvote and flag but replying to them is what they want! I had made a small dash rant, and its rare I do on a meme once. I ended up saving it because I started off doing it on my phone and 3/4 of the way through my phone glitched so I started back on the computer lol.

Here it is: I removed the memers name because its not necessary.

I agree with you but! When I joined IMG what I loved was how helpful everyone was to the new guy, Socrates helped me figure out the ins and outs of memeing along with the help of Invicta103 and I was greatly appreciative of that. Had i joined now with the likes of ------ harassing me about ending my sentences with periods and don't use this and that, I would have been WTF is this place? I would have stuck around for sure but my experience definitely would not have been as good as it was. Sure we can use the excuse that its a web site and trolls and the likes are to be expected, but I say no. The net is not an excuse to be a jerk and spread jerkiness amongst the new and old memebers alike. Yes i like... no I love the fact that we have free speech and can say what we want, and we all can have our own opinions and can express that. Sure he was expressing his right to be a jerk (In my opinion) but again that's not why I love IMG and the people here. Most Of the memebers when I started did not tolerate that kind of behavior or condone it and defend it. Did i hate -----...no, did I like what he was doing and how it affected the people of this site new and old... also no.
Humor, I have and would like to think I can catch humor when its given but I did not pick that up from ------. As you say though and I fully agree with you on is yes its a meme site and thick skin is required if you want to stick around. Meme on you crazy diamond :)

I thank you all for your enlightening com

Yup, there's a particular troll roaming under this bridge. When I first started getting replies from them I just thought they were drunk because most of what they say is pure nonsense. Now, whenever I see their name I just down vote and keep scrolling.

If I notice that they are knew, I "usually" try to let them know...if they continue to not upvote comments, I just tend to ignore them after that.

This is my favorite thing, they act like jerks, then complain they are being picked on.

They try to get me to react all the time so they can try to say that the Big Bad Raydog is bullying them but most of the time the community takes care of them for me. If there's one thing this so-called "popularity" is good for it's that.
6 ups, 7y
True, I've seen it myself. It's kinda hard for them to say somebody is a jerk that has years of proof in their comments that they are not. But still they want attention so they try ;)

There are a few newer users who don't upvote comments they reply to. I won't name them, since I'm sure you'll figure it out since these users have been commenting a lot. The only time I don't upvote a comment I reply to is if that comment is plain rude and disgusting. And that's when I usually downvote it.

If you're going to comment on a meme, at least make the first (your original comment) relatable to the OP. It's annoying when a user comments on a meme and it has nothing to do with the meme. And it can easily be taken as spam.

It isn't good form to "share" a link to your meme on other user's memes. Some users don't mind (like me), but most seem to not like it.

Some good points there! Thanks brotha! I am in complete agreement, the whole link thing is complicated. I always try and post one on the oldest meme on somebodies profile page. That way it's obvious I just want them to see it and not trying to take advantage of their meme doing well. But that is with people I know, if it's a friend it's totally cool. It's only when somebody puts a link to a meme on one of mine that is doing good, that has nothing to do with the meme I posted that I notice it as being poor etiquette. I like getting links, but their is a point when they don't even upvote my meme and are fishing for upvotes that it become annoying. Thanks for commenting!

No problem! Yeah, I don't mind the links as long as they upvote my meme as well. If they don't, I'll just downvote the comment. Usually though I don't mind.

I agree with ya, I've noticed some users commenting on memes with gibberish. And I don't like clicking on a shared comment and being whisked away to that users page.
