Very wise... Within the limited confines of imgflip, we seem to forget that a successful meme is one that gets reposted and shared to the maximum possible extent.

And it's one reason why people who complain about reposts shouldn't be coming to a meme site in the first place.

Meme (noun):

an element of a culture or system of behavior that may be considered to be passed from one individual to another by nongenetic means, especially imitation.

Well, in reality you'd likely get some points with a few votes on your original submission, and if people knew you had made it first, you'd get some "credit" (whatever that concept means when you're taking pictures that aren't yours and, as often as not, putting old jokes on them as captions). Not that people know who we are anyway with anonymous usernames.

But I'm curious. Why do you think that getting points or credit for the idea is part of the reason for making memes?

When a professional comedian stands up, there's the expectation that he/she came up with the material personally. When I see a meme, I have no such expectation.

Look closer, the linked meme is not a repost.

The title is changed, and the user added punctuation (but without matching the font color properly). So it is in fact a different meme.

I'm also assuming the intent behind posting the meme is different (it seems like a troll post), which changes things too. The user is not really "stealing" my joke, but rather making his own joke by appearing to "steal" mine.
