It's called a "Yamaka" and in Hebrew it's know as a "Kippah" it's literal translation is "Skull Cap" Jewish men must wear it during prayer to "Honor God" You know how religions are, full of all kinds of "Tradition!" Lol. It does look like it, doesn't it? I believe what you seeing is the pattern of the weave that mimics the "Lego" look. ( I went and checked the picture, and that's what it is!) :)
