Sock meme? Name recognition helped, admittedly, but the fact that it's presentation was flawless and got across a message in a humorous manner is what earned it my upvote. I rarely notice the names on a meme I upvote,
Pete and Repete. Famous routine in the sixties? It was a kid's joke when I was growing up. What made it stand out was the presentation of the joke. I was laughing so hard I couldn't stay pissed at her for pulling that long scroll off. I've consistently said that making a good meme was similar to casting a show: and she did great in the utilization of so many templates. GIFs? most are "rips" from video files. I do post some of my original GIFs, but today's audience isn't interested in those. I posted two of my most shared GIFs, the snowman pooping snow cones and the cat flipping the bird. They made page three, but couldn't beat out AFV rips.
Meme begging for upvotes? Look again: <a href="https://imgflip.com/i/1nqfvl"><img src="https://i.imgflip.com/1nqfvl.jpg" title="made at imgflip.com"/></a>
If you go to the page, you'll notice that the title does not say I need upvotes to make 1/2 million. It say "I made it anyway". After the fact. It was the day that imgflip upgraded the site that they didn't feature my memes. I tapped in to something that works, but I use it sparingly. A frustration that users have. I tapped into that frustration that every flipper has when their memes don't feature. In my particular case, they did not feature until the next day, AFTER I'd passed the 1/2 million mark. But it was a something that everyone felt. My rip GIF of Sheldon commenting on Latest having nothing but crap. That made front page because it tapped into the same emotion. This one? I don't know. If I'm lucky, it'll make page two or three. I'd be happy. but, again, because it taps into the emotion Flippers have when they see noobs begging for upvotes instead of earning them.
As far as name attachment, long before anyone knew we were related, my cousin posted a meme that made front page. At the time, he'd been a member for 10 months, but hadn't posted in 9, and then, only posted 3 or 4 memes in that time frame. So he had, maybe, a couple hundred points. No rep. No name recognition. no comments. total enigma. Made front page on the first post he made after returning. He still makes front page on occasion, like maybe once or twice a month. Doesn't comment often, doesn't even post every day (Its his busy season now) but he's happy about it.
