hope this gif helps to explain. i did most of this with gimp. i made 6 pictures with different color text and stacked them on top of each other. on all except the last layer i randomly erased parts of the text. as long as you don't erase anything from the bottom layer it will all look like one complete picture. https://i.imgflip.com/1nc1kw.gif

i used gimp 2.8 to do this. since this is what i have it's the only thing im familiar with. you maybe able to do this with other programs but i can't say.

this will work with 2 or more layers of pictures.
here is step by step how to do this

1 import the pictures you are going to use. in this gif i used 3 pictures black red and purple.

2 think of the pictures as layers. place the pictures in order. pick one to be the base. in this gif black is the base picture. the other colors are placed on top of the black.

3 for all layers EXCEPT the base layer... add alpha channel to each layer by right click or go to layer - transparency - add alpha channel

4 select the layer you want to work on. select the eraser tool. begin to erase however much you want but remember to leave some of the color. repeat on each layer except the base. in this gif i erased the word hi from the purple layer and valerielyn from the red. the black part of the red and purple layer is the base layer showing through.

5 after you finish erasing check to see which order looks best. in this gif the purple layer is on top of red first. after the picture of mr magoo the red layer is on top of the purple. the picture of mr magoo is there only to separate the examples.

6 when you are finished go to file - export. name it. i save mine as jpg.
it will ask about quality. i keep it in the 90's. press export again

i knew a guy that lost a 4 foot tall bong and a couple dimes in his trailer for around 5 months. yep a barely furnished single wide trailer. the police got called to his place for an unrelated reason and they started a search of the trailer. the cops started searching his bedroom closet and found it. they bring him in the bedroom to ask him about it and as soon as he saw it he said "THAT'S WHERE IT WAS"

Ha ha! That sounds about right! Those cops are always finding people's stuff, and their timing is always horrible! :)
