The flood occurred when the ground was flatter (meaning level; not that the planet was flat). Also, it was raining all around the world. Thus, there was nowhere for the water to go, so the water level rose. The rain in Hawaii was able to run off into the ocean.

Plus, the word "forty" in the Bible often meant "many." And it may have been a continuous flash flood. And if all the polar ice caps and valley glaciers instantly melted, then that would definitely raise the sea level.

Oh yeah. There's a whole lotta watta at the poles.
