I agree. Swearing takes away from humor IMO.

utilized euphemisms, profanity and profane? Just use the term 'swear word' :)

Glad I'm not the only one that feels this way.

As a former comic, I can agree. Yes, there are some comics that would swear up a storm, but they had a reason for each word. George Carlin was able to do it because he spoke out about profanity and profane words. But he was already a well respected comedian long before the seven dirty words you can't say on television.

One comic brought up that no matter what you do on stage, you have to have at least 10 minutes of clean material. You will get groups that require clean material. Kids in the audience, a church fund raiser, even a funeral. (Need more comics at those than anywhere else)

I've worked online family oriented forums where profanity was not tolerated. If I wanted to pass on an off color joke, I utilized euphemisms. I discovered something: throwing in the euphemisms actually made a joke or story funnier. The common, profanity actually throws off the timing of a joke because of the shock value associated with it. The Big One, the nastiest of profane speech, the granddaddy of all that is unacceptable, is like a pothole on the highway to a punchline. You're listening to the comic, yadda yadda yadda [f word] yadda yadda yadda... You can see that pot hole. Same thing without profanity. Yadda yadda yadda and then we went hhhoooiwwweeee, za badsdabump de bump de whooppie pie ala mode yadda yadda yadda.

Thanks. Therees a time and place for profanity, even in comedy, but it has to be used sparingly or it loses its effect

Don't mind Ranma. He's just a typical, hot headed 16 year old boy that gets a little self conscious at times. While training in China, he fell into a cursed pool, so now, every time he gets splashed with cold water, he turns into a she.

It does feature topless anime girls, but nothing directly groinal. Not even a camel toe. I got one season for my granddaughter for Christmas, my daughter's idea. I told her I'd have to screen it first, and then discussed that it shows cartoon boobs. She looked at me and said that the girls has NEEDED and worn a bra since she was 8. She's 15 now. I mentioned her other daughters, and her reply was if they hadn't seen boobs by now, they would soon enough.

Adult situation, but, other than the bard boobs, nothing you wouldn't see on broadcast TV.

Most people haven't put any thought into it. They just know it's wrong and dirty. Then they go ahead and do it because they can.

Hey, you and Dash just proved my point below.

Thanks for the insight. Great he was. Carlin’s humor had lots of redeeming social value. He told us what we needed to know about society. He didn’t tell dirty jokes.

I did stand up for years and continue writing. I like good humor. Carlin had something to say, and he didn't use the f bomb for a laugh, unless he was talking about the word itself. But it wasn't dirty jokes. Dirty jokes are for the guys unwinding after work over a beer. In our society, they have their place. People don't tell me them anymore because I always cut straight to the punchline. Oh you've heard it before. Yup.

You'll notice that few comics get up and tell oneliners. You don't see Henny Youngmans or Rodney Dangerfields getting the yocks. The reason is because people want stories. But to do a good story, you have to make almost every other line a punchline. It ain't always easy

Perhaps you're right, but wrong in every conceivable way. The Earth has flown through many different realities that alter the concept of us every time. Sometimes we are lifeless rocks on a vast, empty Earth. Other times we are all angels and demons at constant war on Earth, or in that reality, Hellvan. In our previous reality before this one, we were all clear of mind and all at peace. No wars ever had existed, nobody was offended by anything because there was nothing to be offended by, and no unhappiness was ever wrought unto our Earth. But the Gods of Nods who created them and watched over them had a problem. The reality was perfect. Too perfect. The Gods of Nods had created them because they wanted to intoduce the new concept of life to their Overseer. If he approved, they could create Humankind officially as the current Earth was only an experiment. A perfect experiment. A boring experiment. This would never do, Beta Earth needed excitement! So they then introduced a new character to even things out. He was known as Snippert. When Snippert arrived, he showed Beta Earth all the horrors of soon-to-be reality. War, pain, death, and worst of all, profanity. The Beta earthlings did not like the details, only the result. A rough world. A real world. With the pain of reality in place, life could enjoy the benifits even more. The birth of a child. The bravery of heros. A funny comedian. Think about that dickwad motherf**ker.

As someone who hates profanity in general, I am in total agreement with you!

However you can still use them to be funny. Or include them with a larger vocabulary to make it even larger.
