I used to love those bits as a kid. It wasn't until high school that I realized that it was poking fun at "Of Mice and Men".
The Warner Brothers/merrie melodies/looney tunes all had a lot of adult themes that took some time to really get what they were saying if you originally watched them as a kid. Probably because of the format that they were originally presented in, running before a major motion picture in a movie theater, they wanted to drop subtle jokes that adults would get but still get past the censors.
Now, if you watch them on tv they won't even show those parts! Sad!
