The Trump supporters' fear is of change. Instead of embracing the inevitable - for it will happen regardless of how much you push back - they seek an iron fist to smite their enemies. It's a personality cult of an extreme narcissist who pathologically lies to convince his base of his lies. Learn how to adapt to change and it can be fruitful; but Trump tells his acolytes the old authoritarian tale of others out to take your power, therefore lowering their position will increase yours. In his case it's Mexicans, Muslims, and liberals. Same style of BS that was used back during the days of the civil rights movement when southern elites and conservative politicians told working class whites that the blacks were out to take their jobs. All in order to maintain power for a few (and not those working class whites). I don't believe Trump will last beyond his alloted four years - given to him by a MINORITY of voters - but the danger is him diminishing the US's status as country whose ideals are to be looked up to. I'm not JUST an optimist, I don't think the country will be destroyed by his egotistical idiocy, but I think technology and the massive and quick communication and information it brings is too powerful for the authoritarian types to win out in the end - they depend on ignorance. I just think it's sad when a man who loves only himself and not his country can convince just enough people to believe his 'alternative facts' without evidence to get him into a powerful position.
