1. machine guns were the only thing fighters had for offence
2. zeppelins have anti-aircraft guns
3. they carry bombs
4. and thanks to there massive size they pose a very serious threat

and a known weakness
The gas they have to make sure they stay in the air... is explosive so vulnerable to bombs and rockets
