Job losses are far from being new and have been a part of the national news since the 70s. Homelessness didn't Become a major story until the 80s. The main focus on the homeless issue has been homeless vets.

The problem is finding a new angle that will interest viewers and readers. Why are there homeless people? Many would have been housed in institutions due to mental health issues, but that ended in the 80s.

Job losses? Too many businesses close. When a major manufacturer decides to ship jobs overseas or closes the doors because of mismanagement, it hits the news. Unemployment rates have been a constant since I was a teen.

Only true if the media change their ways. Read Bernard Goldberg's 'Bias' for a better explanation of the differing amounts of coverage these issues get from the media depending upon what party the current president is from.

Sounds Interesting. Does he compare national and local media as well in the book? I notice that local media focuses on these issues more than national because of the very fact they are local.
