I thought that you had to get featured first before anyone can upvote it?

I thought that featured meant it got past the mods and onto latest.

I'm not 100% sure, but as best as I've figured out the system here's my explanation.

Can a meme get upvoted before it gets featured? Yes. You can share the URL, and people can follow the link to it and upvote it and comment on it.

Featured does mean it got past the mods and onto the Latest pages.

Getting upvotes to help you get featured is a little more grey area. This is also more for custom templates. Sometimes it seems like for whatever reason a custom meme isn't getting featured. Other custom memes made after it are featuring... something seems to be wrong with situation right? So my best theory is the view the mods have for approving memes has some sort of "hot" element involved. Getting a few upvotes would theoretically move it up the "hot" list because the other unfeatured memes will usually have 0 upvotes. So it would potentially help put on top of their list to approve.

I'm not too hung up on my featured rate because I tend to go dark when I make a custom template and I think that's why they don't get featured.

I could never figure out how pantysmile got his(?) stuff past the mods. Almost evey image had a d**do or but plug in it!

If it's just dark I don't think that would necessarily not let it get featured. Believe it not pantysmile's memes didn't violate the Terms of Service, they just needed to be flagged NSFW.

I've also figured out another thing that isn't mentioned in the Posting Guidelines that causes memes to not get featured. The best example for this is a comic strip. The entire joke is already on the picture that gets uploaded. You don't add any, or minimal, text to it. Other users can't reuse that template because the whole joke is already there. Those don't get featured as memes. If you do them as Demotivationals and figured a caption for it, that's one way to get around that.

If you ever have one that doesn't feature and you can't figure out why, feel free to send me a link to it and I can give my best interpretation and at least lend an upvote to see if that helps.

In regards to your second paragraph about comic strips, all good points, plus I think that there might be something to do with copyrights on the images. TOS says "no watermarks", although I still see some of those get through.

They don't seem to give a rats ass about watermarks. I've seen some watermarks that essentially ruin the image and they still approved.

i think MOD's must be able to upvote when they're reviewing submissions too, it's happened to a couple of mine where they've had upvotes...but no views :-/

Has that just been recently? There's ways to see unfeatured memes, but I'm holding onto that trick for now. I know another memer figured it out recently too.

i don't know, i'm at a loss for the whole thing but i noticed a couple of mine were upvoted just as i submitted but showed no views, so i assumed the MODs could upvote. a decent FAQ wouldn't go amiss on this site :-p

Before, and even shortly after, memes get featured views and upvotes don't always show correctly.

Nope, it's time consuming and makes zero sense, unless he simply wants to be on the leaderboard with 0 memes submitted. You memers on the rise though will eventually knock him out. I think when I made it in he was in the mid to low 60's.

He has only a little over 5000 creations, that'd mean he'd only have about 10000 points, 2 per creation. If you click Generate Meme, then go to change settings, it gives you 2 points but doesn't add to your creations number. So he did that over 165,000 times...

why would anyone even bother!?
