Jesus said that the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. It got boiled down to money being the root of all evil, so really, you're closer to the original sentiment with the worship of money.

That wasn't something Jesus said, it's from 1 Timothy, which is a pastoral attributed to Paul of Tarsus though probably not written by Authentic Paul. The koine used a word that would be better translated as "many different kinds" rather than "all kinds"; in other words the writer was saying that love of money was the root of much, but not all, evil.

I agree. My point was just the focus on the money part of it though. There are many reasons why people commit atrocities and sin.
