He set a bad precedent say your going to Mexico and he'll bribe you with tax break to automate your factory and put more people out of work

Not true. He saved almost 1,100 jobs out of 2000. Carrier already built their new plant in Mexico (which obama did nothing to stop) so he had to offer them a tax break because he isn't in office yet. Once he gets in he'll be imposing a 35% tariff tax on American companies operating in foreign countries which will bring them and stop new ones from leaving. Multiple companies have already said they will be returning.

And Japan and Germany were allies in WW2.

I know that's what he said which most of which has been proven false as far as the tariff tax we will see when he gets into office which we won't know til the real election coming up in the electoral college. Also no Japan and Germany were not allies America was fighting two separate wars. This is so us sith

Not you, I'm saying Obama is wrong because you shouldn't apologize to Japan.

I honestly think an apology is warranted. If you look at WW2 and what happened in Pearl Harbor, yes the Japanese attacked without issuing a declaration of war, and in fact it was en route but delayed due to a typewriter issue. Their idea was to deliver the declaration and attack as it's being handed over.

That being said...they attacked a military base. After the U.S. had enough of the war, which wasn't going very well in the Pacific Theater, we killed 250,000+ civilians, including elderly and children, and condemned survivors to radiation sickness and poisoning for generations. It was (for lack of a better term) way overkill.

Now that THAT was said, the only good thing to come out of it all is the lesson that humans should never use WMD's in warfare against other humans ever again. They can exist to deter their use but that type of death should be a flat out taboo.

So he apologized. So what? Hell, I wasn't even alive in 1945 and I openly apologize for my country killing a half million of their citizens when it should have been handled (and was by the Japanese) military to military.

To completely flip on my stance - we should have nuked the Nazis. They were killing millions and needed to be stopped at near any cost and I doubt I would argue the point if it were them instead of Japan.

Nuking the Nazis would've resulted in innocents being killed too (only about 30% of Germans were Nazis or approved of them). Japan was an ally to the Nazis, the death toll of innocents is on them.

To ChumpChange & Opan_ir: I respect your sentiments but ask that you read my comment post further down this string to put this issue into accurate historical context. It's not simply the Big Bad USA killing a fly with a hammer. There's much more too it than that. Thank you for considering my input.

ChumpChange - Not trying to troll you or start a flame war, just a friendly discussion. You bring up some very good points.

The point of my original meme was not that Obama had apologized for Pearl Harbor, but that I wouldn't put it past him. He pretty much apologized to the whole world for our actions post-911.

Regarding civilian casualties in WW II, that was certainly a high water mark in human history committed by all sides.

The Japanese certainly were no saints. Pre-Pearl Harbor, they had their way in China, the Phillipines, ad other places. Raping and killing civilians was the norm. During the battle of Okinawa, they were throwing their own women and children off of cliffs into the sea. That was part of the equation to deciding whether to use nukes or not. Their never surrender attitude would have led to millions dead on both sides if we'd have had to invade the mainland. They certainly didn't follow the Geneva convention either when it came to POWs. Read "Unbroken" or read up on The Bataan Death March.

The battle of Britain - Nazis, by all accounts, first accidentally bombed a city, but then the gloves were off on both sides. They bombed British cities, the Allies bombed theirs. The Nazis even used the V-1s and V-2s, very indiscriminate killing machines. Ever study the siege of Stalingrad? Civilians had to resort to cannibalism to survive.

I also like your lesson about WMDs being a deterrent. Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) was the policy throughout the Cold War. It's also why Saddam Hussein didn't come out and say that he didn't have WMDs and let the inspectors in. In his mind, the idea that he had them is what kept Iran from invading him.

Anyhow, good talk, again, not disagreeing with you, just looking at all sides.

I'm not a WW2 expert or claim to know all the atrocities committed by all sides - it was extreme everywhere. I live in a dream world of compassion, empathy, common sense and the idea Humanity can unite. If an apology starts that process I offer it willingly. But again, I live in a dream world and trust is a very tricky thing and absolutely should be earned.

All I've ever wanted is peace and good will towards my fellow human. The whole scifi idea about other species finding it impossible or apalling to kill their own is very appealing to me. One day maybe we can achieve it but it'll take courage and compromise.

On a side note, we can agree to disagree. Nobody is flaming anyone. Conversations and good discussion stops when tempers flare. I'm a pretty cool and easy going guy - provided stuff makes sense lol

In Sept. 1940 Japan, Germany & Italy signed the Tripartite Pact, officially creating the "Axis Powers". Regardless of what they thought of one another, they were, in fact, allies.

It's not quite that simple. Italy was always the odd-man out but Germany & Japan shared technology & intelligence. I would love to hear your views in greater detail & perhaps learn something, but IMGflip is not the appropriate forum for a lengthy discussion.

Well I AM a WWII Pacific Theatre expert so let me offer my thoughts in keeping with this cordial dialog: Yes, the use of atomic weapons on Japan caused enormous civilian casualties & completely leveled two major cities. But today the decision to use WMDs must be analyzed in the context of 1945, not 2017. First a factual clarification: by 1943, due to the genius of both Adm. Chester Nimitz, USN, & Army Gen Douglas MacArthur, the Pacific War was well ahead of the war planners' schedule for defeating Japan. Abby_Normal is correct that the Japanese were, throughout their occupied territories in Asia & the Pacific, committing unspeakable atrocities against millions of civilians & POWs. We knew this was going on. However, even though they were facing a tsunami of military strength against which they had no logical hope to prevail (fact, not pro-US sentiment), Japan refused to capitulate. But we were logically-thinking people up against, at that time, mythologically-thinking people. Japan had not lost a fight in over 2000 years, truly believed God lived with them as the Emperor & divine providence was on their side. They vowed to fight on believing divinity would lead them to a "decisive victory" where the Americans would be annihilated. While technologically superior going into the war, they believed more in "fighting spirit" than continuing to develop advanced technology. Although fighting spirit was important, the US believed in advancing technology & weaponry. The Japanese were bewildered when their ships came under fire from US ships they could not see (RADAR). They were bewildered when their incredible Zero fighter planes were shot down by the dozens by newer, more advanced US planes. They were bewildered by the accuracy of our radar-guided anti-aircraft fire. They believed if they just fought harder, they'd prevail. Thousands upon thousands of Japanese soldiers were sent to needless deaths against US forces who simply mowed them down like cutting the lawn. But the Japanese never changed tactics, they just kept throwing more soldiers into this carnage. To Truman, the decision was academic. Keep fighting like this for God knows how long, with millions of pointless casualties, or deliver upon Japan an apocalypse that would knock some sense into its wartime government. The deaths of some 225,000 Japanese civilians, sad as it may be, was not in vain. Their sacrifice saved millions of other lives on both sides.

BTW - the Japan of today is NOT the Japan of 1945. The above-referenced apocalypse did, in fact, knock sense into the Emperor, who used his "divine" authority to order surrender. Today Japan & the Japanese people are a peace-loving, prosperous ally to the US, & we to them.
