Not true. He saved almost 1,100 jobs out of 2000. Carrier already built their new plant in Mexico (which obama did nothing to stop) so he had to offer them a tax break because he isn't in office yet. Once he gets in he'll be imposing a 35% tariff tax on American companies operating in foreign countries which will bring them and stop new ones from leaving. Multiple companies have already said they will be returning.

I honestly think an apology is warranted. If you look at WW2 and what happened in Pearl Harbor, yes the Japanese attacked without issuing a declaration of war, and in fact it was en route but delayed due to a typewriter issue. Their idea was to deliver the declaration and attack as it's being handed over.

That being said...they attacked a military base. After the U.S. had enough of the war, which wasn't going very well in the Pacific Theater, we killed 250,000+ civilians, including elderly and children, and condemned survivors to radiation sickness and poisoning for generations. It was (for lack of a better term) way overkill.

Now that THAT was said, the only good thing to come out of it all is the lesson that humans should never use WMD's in warfare against other humans ever again. They can exist to deter their use but that type of death should be a flat out taboo.

So he apologized. So what? Hell, I wasn't even alive in 1945 and I openly apologize for my country killing a half million of their citizens when it should have been handled (and was by the Japanese) military to military.

To completely flip on my stance - we should have nuked the Nazis. They were killing millions and needed to be stopped at near any cost and I doubt I would argue the point if it were them instead of Japan.

Nuking the Nazis would've resulted in innocents being killed too (only about 30% of Germans were Nazis or approved of them). Japan was an ally to the Nazis, the death toll of innocents is on them.

The point of my original meme was not that Obama had apologized for Pearl Harbor, but that I wouldn't put it past him. He pretty much apologized to the whole world for our actions post-911.

Regarding civilian casualties in WW II, that was certainly a high water mark in human history committed by all sides.

The Japanese certainly were no saints. Pre-Pearl Harbor, they had their way in China, the Phillipines, ad other places. Raping and killing civilians was the norm. During the battle of Okinawa, they were throwing their own women and children off of cliffs into the sea. That was part of the equation to deciding whether to use nukes or not. Their never surrender attitude would have led to millions dead on both sides if we'd have had to invade the mainland. They certainly didn't follow the Geneva convention either when it came to POWs. Read "Unbroken" or read up on The Bataan Death March.

The battle of Britain - Nazis, by all accounts, first accidentally bombed a city, but then the gloves were off on both sides. They bombed British cities, the Allies bombed theirs. The Nazis even used the V-1s and V-2s, very indiscriminate killing machines. Ever study the siege of Stalingrad? Civilians had to resort to cannibalism to survive.

I also like your lesson about WMDs being a deterrent. Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) was the policy throughout the Cold War. It's also why Saddam Hussein didn't come out and say that he didn't have WMDs and let the inspectors in. In his mind, the idea that he had them is what kept Iran from invading him.

I'm not a WW2 expert or claim to know all the atrocities committed by all sides - it was extreme everywhere. I live in a dream world of compassion, empathy, common sense and the idea Humanity can unite. If an apology starts that process I offer it willingly. But again, I live in a dream world and trust is a very tricky thing and absolutely should be earned.

All I've ever wanted is peace and good will towards my fellow human. The whole scifi idea about other species finding it impossible or apalling to kill their own is very appealing to me. One day maybe we can achieve it but it'll take courage and compromise.

On a side note, we can agree to disagree. Nobody is flaming anyone. Conversations and good discussion stops when tempers flare. I'm a pretty cool and easy going guy - provided stuff makes sense lol
