Each state has their own share of electoral votes. They add them up at the end and it takes 270 for a candidate to win

but you only have 50 states...is this like, districts within a state? :-/

No. Just the way they tally the votes. For instance, if Hillary gets more votes in North Carolina, she'll automatically obtain 15 electoral votes. If she gets more votes in Florida, she automatically obtains 29 electoral votes. That's 44 electoral votes for just those two states! The first of them to reach 270 electoral votes wins

that sounds like a weird system! is it something to do with population distribution in those states? we tried a similar thing a few years back "proportional representation".....DID NOT WORK! :-p
