I think people just get frustrated when their memes aren't as visible as they want them to be. It can be hard to get visibility on imgflip.
But participating and making comments on other people's memes is more helpful than complaining about the situation or believing that the system is rigged.

Although, given who has commented thus far (lack of other commenters), there may be a conspiracy to keep this one off the front page. ;-)
The way I looked for memes that were made by users not on the Top 100 Leaderboard was to click on profiles of the users whose memes were the front page at the times I was online.
If I saw that their score was as high as the #100 user on the Top 100 User leaderboard or higher, I put the meme on this list.
The user in the #100 spot at the time I started keeping track was dazzelingdimand, at 273232 points.

This is awesome, and a great example of how you don't have to be a power user to make the front page. Well done sir!
It's difficult to get a meme on the front page, but not impossible. If enough people see your meme and like it, you can get on the front page, no matter how long you've been on the site.
I think what happens sometimes is that people come up with patterns to make sense of what they see, but then they start believing the patterns they've made up instead of believing what's in front of their eyes.
