How do you know when you're downvoted?
reply
9 ups, 1 reply
There's really no way to know on a meme unless it gets knocked back to submission...but in comments, you can tell, if your comment is lower in the stream than someone else's comment that has less votes on it...and of course if your comment is hidden, that means it has received enough downvotes to make it a negative number.

It was when you posted this originally 10 months ago that I got the idea for the feature we could individually turn off or on, and that was the ability to see who voted which way on our meme via notifications. This would have exposed those who were being downvote fairies but also return the favor to those who kept upvoting our memes. Of course one individual kept trying to say I only wanted this in order to become a downvote fairy myself, regardless of the fact that downvote fairies downvote everything no matter what, which actually started my whole downfall on this site. I guess that is what happens when I have ideas.

While it would be nice to see who upvotes our memes as well as identify downvote fairies...knowing who downvotes you would inevitably lead to some people abusing that knowledge by attacking anyone that downvotes them...not saying you or I would do that...just saying that there are plenty of users that would...being able to individually turn it on or off would be cool tho'. I personally wouldn't mind knowing who upvotes my meme tho'. That part I DO like.

I do think that being able to identify downvote fairies would actually help this site. Knowing they could be targeted could either cause them to leave or hinder their actions, which would allow for more memes to be see vs get hidden for no reason.
reply

No arguments there...identifying downvote fairies would indeed help the site...If there was a way to do it without exposing the average user that is just downvoting a meme they don't like or are legitimately offended by, I'm all for it. But I don't like the idea of exposing "innocent" users to attack just for downvoting a meme they don't like, unless they themselves provoke the attack, then they get whatever they get...that's the only problem I see.

The best solution is for a community involvement effort, and features added to our profiles. Besides needing to add a block feature so we not only block certain users from commenting to us, on our memes, allowing us to comment on their memes/comments, and even see each other's memes, there could be a "Mark User As Spammer" option (or something similar). This would keep a tally of how many people mark them for something like excessive downvotes, and if a certain amount of people mark them in like a week time period, they start loosing abilities on the site, like limit how many downvotes they can do a day. So for instance if 10 people marked someone within a week, they are limited to 20 downvotes combined on comments and memes. If that number was to go up to 30, they could lose the ability to downvote for X amount of days. If 50 people marked them, then they are locked out from the site for a couple weeks. This would allow the community more as a whole to determine who is an attacker and who has legitimately done something like downvote a bad meme. The option could also be there to have something like a user upvote button, where if someone is unjustly getting attacked by the downvote from someone using alts, others can compensate and raise their rep for the week.

Yes I know this can make things difficult in development of the site, and I know the chances of them actually doing something like this is 0.00001%, but if it was to happen, it reduces the need for admins and allow the community to run the site, in a way.

I gotta admit, I like where you're going with this...I really like the idea of limiting how many downvotes a user can have on any given day...that is a REALLY GOOD idea to me...that's not what we are here for anyway, we're suppose to be here to have fun, not look for people to downvote...if someone were to post a really offensive meme, the community as a whole could get rid of them quick enough.

Now I seem to remember posting a meme a while back about the idea of a block user function to rid ourselves of trolls and I remember you attacking me saying that I just wanted to silence people's opinions...now that wasn't even close to being true, so I'm not worried about it, but I can't help but be curious about what changed your tune about this? I totally agree that we need one, but you didn't seem to happy about it back then...just saying.

But I like this whole idea you just outlined...there's not really a lot that can be done about alts, that I can see...you would think that the mods know which alts belong to who already, but apparently they don't or don't care...

I do believe on that meme I had also made the comment that a couple months prior to you making that meme that I had also suggested the same thing in a meme. I don't recall saying that blocking someone would be silencing the trolls, but it could have been how I worded things that it might have appeared that way. I would have to go back and check sometime to see if the comments are still in existence to see the context of what was stated. I normally associated the silencing of alts to the downvoting of comments to the point in which they are hidden, which also hurts the comment rep of the account and can limit how often they are allowed to comment.

The best way to limit alts is through IP filtering. Regardless of the IP given to a computer over a network, the main IP from the provider can be identified. ipchicken is a good way to see that. The one thing I don't know for sure on whether or not it can be seen is if they can see the mac address of the device. If that can be done, then that is really the best way, tying 1 active account to any mac address that uses it. By deleting an account, any mac address associated with that account woukd be wiped from the system ad well, allowing for a new one to be created with that device. But only the deletion of the account would allow this, not something simple like allowing the user to choose later which device they want connected to that account. This might have some issues if there is a single comouter being used for a family and each member of the family wants their own account, but not sure how many that would actually effect.

Well like I said, I'm not worried about it...it's all water under the bridge to me...just curious was all... I'm all for a block user button...that would eliminate alot of flame wars. I like to read flame wars as much as the next guy but that shit does get old.

I have no idea what the website can and can't see but I'm assuming that they can monitor where a troll account is coming from and block repeat offenders coming from that location...not sure how IP addresses work for phones tho'.

Both systems feasibly can't be implemented - often the IP seen by a web server representing the client will just be one of a pool of IPs from a proxy server. Blocking that one IP may block other users, say, at a college or at a company, maybe even different phones connected to an ISP, although I don't know much about how phones get their IP addresses. IP blocking is more commonly used as a temporary measure when a website is being "attacked" like a DOS Denial Of Service, so it needs to temporarily block where the attack is coming from, to restore service, possibly preventing valid users to connect (needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few). Mac addresses are local and only seen on the directly attached physical network. If imgflip had an app, *maybe* it could read it because the app is running on the device, but you won't get it from the server side, because there are so many network hops in between, and client side JavaScript isn't going to give it either. Maybe I'm wrong but that's my understanding. So cookies *might* help to identify sessions from the same user across different accounts, assuming users don't use shared workstations/kiosks to check imgflip (or siblings etc) which may incorrectly link them. For example when I log off one account, and logon another, imgflip could probably detect this if they wanted to, but there are valid use cases for this, such as users sharing/passing around a device. So there's not much other than focussing on the account itself. I also thought of restricting downvotes so a user can not downvote more than they upvote. But for a downvote fairy this may not be effective, they will simply circumvent by upvoting some random accounts so they can downvote a particular account. It's hard to come up with a system that can not be circumvented in some way. But I'm happy to hear and discuss ideas, maybe we will come up something that would work.
