Actually, this is outdated. You no longer have to do this to reply with a non-popular meme.

GENERATING AN EMPTY COMMENT MEME: I think this one is pretty well-known, as we've all encountered the message that pops up when you try to generate a comment-meme that is "empty" (i.e. has no text, no drawings, no "added" images). This happens to me when, instead of creating a meme from a template, I upload an image which already has text on it (e.g. a meme that I previously created, and then saved as an image, locally).

1.) Enter some random text into one of the text fields (at least one non-whitespace character)
2.) Expand the "More Options" section, and set the "Max Font Size" value to 0 (whatever text you had entered will disappear)
3.) The image will remain blank, but you will be able to successfully generate the meme

I know of one other way to accomplish this, but prefer this method.

Try this website to get cool custom text colors : http://www.w3schools.com/colors/colors_picker.asp

Thanks Raycat! Yeah, there are tons of these all over the Net. I use this one a lot: http://www.rapidtables.com/web/color/RGB_Color.htm

There are also quite a few sites that allow you to key in a color code, and then get a set of corresponding colors, based on some criteria (e.g. complementary, monochromatic, triad):
https://color.adobe.com/create/color-wheel/
https://www.sessions.edu/color-calculator/

MAXIMUM NUMBER OF TAGS: At first I thought this was a bug with particular tags, but it turns out that a submission cannot have more than 6 tags. If you try to add a 7th, clicking on the tag in the list will do nothing.

Also a character limit (I use long tags all the time).

Ah, of course. Good to know.

ROTATING AN IMAGE - BEWARE: You've probably noticed the small "circular arrow" button located to the left of the "Add Scumbag Hat" button, above the meme image. Clicking this button will rotate the image 90 degrees, clock-wise. One click will turn the image on its side. Two clicks will turn the image upside-down. Four clicks will bring the image back to its original orientation. However, be aware that this button also acts as a "Reset." That is to say, using it will clear: scumbag hats, images added "inside" the current image, as well as all drawings. In short, if you want the image to be rotated, perform that operation first. Interestingly, an image added "below" the base image will be retained when rotating, and rotates along with the base image.

be careful what time you submit a meme. there are internet dark times when there are very few people online, and your meme can slip too far down the Latest pile before anyone is really active. aiming for USA followed by Euro primetimes seems to work best

I've definitely made this mistake before! Timing can make all the difference!

REGARDING TAGS, PT 1: It seems that clicking on a tag will pull up a list of featured submissions which include that tag. This is what we would expect. Generally, the list will read "Images tagged <tag name>." When you create a new meme using a featured/site template, the meme will automatically include a tag which is equivalent to the template's title (e.g. a meme created with the “Confession Bear” template will automatically include a "confession bear" tag). If you click this tag, you will actually get the list of memes created with that template (rather than a list of “Images tagged <tag name>”).

REGARDING TAGS, PT. 2: You’ll also notice a couple of other, “special” tags: “memes” (highlighted in green), “gifs” (highlighted in fuchsia), and “funny” (highlighted in yellow – appears by default on pie charts). Interestingly, “memes” and “gifs,” when clicked, will take you to the main page, and present the corresponding list of featured submissions. “Funny,” however, which does not correspond to any “submission type,” is treated like any other tag (returning a list of featured submissions which have that tag). But here’s something interesting I discovered (and which I contacted ImgFlip about): You’ll observe that any meme created from a user template does not include the “memes” tag by default. If you want the meme to have that tag, you must add it manually.

However, regardless of whether or not the meme has the “memes” tag, it is still considered “other,” in terms of its “submission type," and the meme’s appearance in the main page list is based exclusively on whether or not the “other” filter is checked. So, in other words, the list filters are based on this “submission type” value, rather than on the tags. Your custom submission having the "memes" tag will NOT keep it in the list, when "other" is unchecked.

DEFAULT TAGS FOR MEMES CREATED WITH USER TEMPLATES: In general, a meme created from a user template will have only a single tag by default - the template's name (this name also serves as the default title of any meme generated using the template). These memes will not automatically include the green "memes" tag.

If you want your own custom template to automatically include the "memes" tag, you must append "memes" to the image name, when you upload it (enter in the desired name, followed by a comma, then "memes", without the quotes). The only drawback here is that the ", memes" text is then part of the template name. This is kind of a turn-off, when you see the template in a set of search results (just my opinion).

In addition, this ", memes" text will be part of the default title of any meme generated using the template (not super-critical, since titles can be edited). However, in the tags list, the template name and "memes" will correctly appear as separate tags.

or you can just add "memes" to the tags when you edit the image after making it...
5 ups, 8y
Absolutely. This is actually what I prefer, since having "memes" as part of the template title really annoys me.

try to avoid creating a NSFW meme. that filter is automatically deactivated, and not many people realise this/choose to activate it. this means that images given the NSFW (either automatically or having been flagged by users) will get less publicity.
5 ups, 8y
Right. You can't really expect an NSFW meme to make it to the front page :/ Which is unfortunate, because what makes them NSFW can also make them better/funnier (e.g. profanity).

Re: submission times

Always generate your meme immediately before submitting it (when a batch of memes come out, they're in order of when they were generated, so if you submit a meme you made a long time ago, it'll be much farther down, and less visible.) If you want to submit an image you made a while ago, it's best to remake it.

For site templates, making and submitting just before the top of the hour seems best (h:55 or h:56).

I'm not sure about custom templates.

Thanks for the info, Socrates!!

More info has come out recently (mid-2021). Upvotes only add points if the meme was created less than 2 months ago.

A meme upvote adds 40 points to the meme-maker and 1 point to the upvoter, and a comment upvote adds 30 points to the commenter. I don't know whether the 2-month cutoff applies to comment upvotes but it probably does.

ON MEME SUBMISSIONS AND MEME TEMPLATES: Note that the word “meme” is used on the site in two distinct ways – in one sense, to refer to a meme template, and in a second sense, to refer to an actual meme creation (the output of a meme template). This is further complicated by the fact that, in addition to “creations,” we also have “submissions” and “featured submissions.” If a creation is a meme, then these will also be memes. However, a creation need not be a meme (e.g. it could be a pie chart instead).

The only search functionality that I know of is the “meme search” (it's in two different locations, but appears to be the same search). To be clear, this functionality searches on meme templates, rather than meme submissions. The results of a search are broken down into "featured memes" and “user templates.” If you select a “featured meme” (or, less ambiguously, a featured/site template) you get a list of featured submissions that were created using that template. Selecting a “user template” will take you to a page where you can “Caption this Meme,” or return to “All Meme Templates.” If you choose to caption the meme, you are taken to the meme-maker. This page will also include a list of featured memes (or, less ambiguously, featured meme submissions) based on the template, if there are any.
