"Gitmo" is short for "Guantanamo Bay", the site of an American military base and detention facility. Following Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom, the Bush Administration held suspected terrorists there without trial, criminal charges, or legal representation. Gitmo personnel also conducted "enhanced interrogation" procedures on detainees, which in the eyes of the international community amounts to torture. President Obama promised to close the prison during his 2008 Presidential campaign, but has run into significant opposition from Congress. It is his goal that the detainees be transferred to prisons in the United States and stand trial for their alleged crimes, either in civilian or military court.

The prisoners of Gitmo are not "the most hardened" of terrorists. Many were innocent--one just drove a car, another was a chef. And, since the unconstitutional U.S. PATRIOT Act gave the warmongers the right to claim anyone they don't like a "terrorist", it doesn't mean much. The only reason they can claim Iran supports "terrorists" is because they labeled their elite military a "terrorist" organization. It's the only reason they can claim the Taliban (a legitimate political party) are "terrorists". They even use this to claim that any boy in the Middle East 15 years or older is a "combatant". It's how they assassinated a 15 year old U.S. citizen without being held accountable.

Hamas is a makeshift military for Palestine. The Palestinians are kept in an open-air prison and aren't allowed to have a "real" military so they made Hamas to protect them from Israeli attacks. They're not "terrorists". Hezbollah is a legitimate political party in Lebanon that is also armed. The, too, exist to protect the Lebanese from Israeli attacks. Israel is a well-armed country and has no problem using those weapons on their neighbors.

Palestine did not exist in 1946. The Arabs refused to accept a two state solution. The Arab Higher Committee did not create a state and instead they chose to attack the Israels. As a result the Arabs lost more land. Transjordan, Egypt and the other members of The Arab League are responsible for the current state of their people in Palestine. They should welcome their people back to those county instead of keeping them caged where they are. Every piece of lost territory has come as a result of failed military attacks against Israel. The situation that the Palestinians find themselves in today is a direct result of their Arab neighbors actions. Even today the State of Palestine only wants the pre 1967 borders. Palestine didn't even declare itself a state until 1988.

It's really terrible that the Palestinian's Arab neighbors keep them in such a terrible "open-air prison". They should really do something to help them like welcome them to their countries. The Europeans have been very welcoming to Arab refugees. It would be nice to see Jordan open their border to the Palestinians. I guess the rest of the Arab world would rather continue to use the Palestinians as a political tool. Hamas and Hezbollah both strap bombs to children in order to kill women and children. Most of them shouldn't have been put in Gitmo to begin with. Many were sold for cash and innocent. But, after over a decade being stuck in prison, tortured, not allowed lawyers or a trial. . . they should be released to a legitimate mental health facility not just dumped in some country they've never been in before.
