actually what you forget is that Ross Perot had 30% of the vote locked up, more then enough to siphon off electoral votes. However Ross went off into crazy land then suddenly dropped out off the race for no apparent reason then with one month left re entered the race. Had this not happened Ross Perot would have been a threat to upset the apple cart. Perot sabotaged himself not the system. However you probably forget that part of it.

Ok the whig party fell out of the favor with many of its members, so many fractured off and formed the republican party to directly compete with the whigs. The whigs lost and disintegrated, the Republicans then replaced the whigs. However within the 1860 election the whig party was gone replaced by the Republican's still a third party at the time. The democrats the sole major party along the the Constitutional union and Southern democrat.
