memes can get downvoted out of submisssion if there are more downvotes than upvotes. It also affects whether or not your meme moves up on the hotlist. You also lose points if you get downvotes.

That was the problem and why it is not longer visble. Too many people were bitching about getting downvotes. It was causing animosity.

What you're saying there sounds pretty accurate, but we don't really have a way that I know of for testing about whether downvotes affect a meme's position in the hotlist for sure or not.

But they do affect the positions of comments in comment threads (sometimes you can see comments with higher ups lower on the page than other comments with fewer ups, and some comments can even be hidden by downvotes). So it seems reasonable to think it would affect a meme's position in the hotlist too. :)

Did we not have a conversation sometime ago skilled bot programmers/SJW &tumblr removing someone's featured meme via the downvote button.

They should make downvotes visible

They used to be visible, but they decided to remove it a while back.

Downvotes are still visible in memestreams.

Memestreams are places where people can post and look at memes, that aren't part of the normal submitted memes on imgflip. They're usually grouped around certain topics, or interests.

The good news is that they have unlimited submissions. The bad news is that since they don't show up among the normal imgflip submissions, people won't see them unless they visit that stream.

The down vote still works, just doesn't show up on the meme. I still down vote memes that break the rules and are trollish in nature.
