Thanks for your response. The key issue in this situation is that the guy is working, seems eager about learning a new job and is committed to a 12 hour shift to support his family. The fact that he's a nice guy is a bonus.

We had to be a little considerate about trying to help out someone we really didn't know well. For reasons like dignity or pride a person may not like it if you said, "We heard you're hungry. Here's some food." So we figured even an inanimate object would be helpful.

The guy is Somali and doesn't seem to be too hard core. For instance, we know he likes Hustler magazine (he found one in our men's room). Don't offer him food that contains pork or cow (something about cloven feet). Personally, I believe the company should give him a chance. We'll see if he gets through the probationary period.
