I worked in logistics, and software designed to load trucks using this method was once new. Every developer sold software that can stack better than the last guys, and this progressed for almost a decade. The system of quickly developing IP to 'load' trucks with more product went on for a decade; it was a smaller market so it never made the mainstream news. Eventually the market on IT Logistic companies involved with maximizing trailer space loss value, because the developers eventually developed software that required more variable cost than having no software to such an extent that some exceeded the marginal cost of not having the software, too.
